Universitat Pompeu Fabra was established as a public university in 1990. Committed from its beginnings to the pursuit of excellence, it holds 22 undergraduate programs, 91 master courses and 9 doctoral degrees in the fields of biomedical sciences, social sciences and humanities and communication and information technologies. The UPF serves nowadays over 11500 students, around 25% coming from abroad, with around 1300 academic staff and 630 administrative support personnel. Despite its short history, UPF is at the forefront of research as an internationally recognized contributor to state-of-the art in several of its areas of interest and its translation into academic degrees. This strong focus on excellence has led UPF to consistently rank among top five Spanish Universities in terms of both scientific productivity and academic efficiency.

The university has created new intensive knowledge-based structures at the heart of the city of Barcelona in the areas of Biomedical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Media and Communication Technologies. This latest area groups UPF’s Escola Superior Politècnica (delivering degrees in Computer Science, Telematics and Media Technologies), the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, high-tech companies, other universities, technology centres and public administrations within the expanding Barcelona 22@ technology district to create an outstanding area for the conception and implementation of RTD projects.

The Networking Technology and Strategies Research Group (NeTS, http://www.nets.upf.edu) is part of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies. It focuses its activities on the definition and the impact of the network technologies and strategies, especially of the mobile communications. Therefore, from the technological point of view, the group's research is deployed around Quality of Service issues on wireless communications, the design and planning of network and mobile protocols, alternative models of telecommunication operators, etc. This research is completed with the analysis of these technologies' impact on the society and the evaluation of regulatory policies and economic issues of telecommunication services. UPF research activity is focused on the area of mobile and multimedia wireless communications: QoS provision, routing in ad-hoc / mesh networks, MAC/PHY cross-layer design and traffic analysis and modelling.

Its work methodology follows the classic patterns of research in networking: analytical methods (mathematical modelling), simulation (Matlab, ns-2) and testbed realization (especially in the area of wireless and multimedia).

Relevant Competence

NeTS-UPF Research Group has been developing a noticeable research on different wireless topics for more than ten years. During this period, some knowledge transfer projects has also been arisen, mainly through cooperative development projects with the most important ICT companies in Catalunya and Europe. Telefonica I+D, Vodafone Research Labs, Indra, Alcatel, Huawei Ltd, Tecsidel as well as a list of SMEs have been usual NeTS partners in these projects. A reduced set of patents (up to now we have two plus one ongoing application) and a long list of publications is the most clear clue of this accumulated know how biased towards less-applied research. Another interesting result is the number of Ph.D. thesis developed at NeTS during the last years. A set of research results are now ready for being transferred to this companies increasing its competitiveness and integrating part of this results in its chain-value. The practical orientation regarding to the Catalan context, NeTS research group is just in the middle of the 22@ ICT district, that makes even more feasible the joint cooperation between the group and the private and public companies around. Some links have been already created, Indra, FBDigital, FBMedia, Barcelona 22@ and Localret have been NeTS partners in several projects. Nowadays is the most convenient moment for exploiting all this results regarding not only to the 22@ located companies, but also to its main headquarters all around Europe in an articulated way.
